Names

In deciding on our names (I was just about to write baby names, but that sounds stupid. What’s the difference between a baby name and the one you have at 25?) our parents took into consideration educational ability. As in, those named John are more succesful in school and get better grades. Mama talked about a study she had read once where teachers were given identical papers except for a student’s name, forcing the name to be the determinator of any grade differences. The more traditional names seemed to be received better by the teachers, which is why us kids don’t have crazy names.

I am indebted to that study, because otherwise I would have been named Harmony. True story.
